van Gogh, Vincent: Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a painter who was part of the Post-Impressionist art movement that took place at the end of the 19th century and carried into the 20th Century. He is a famous artist, partly because of his periodic mood swings, which landed him into a mental institution, partly for his drastic actions, chopping of part of his ear to give to a woman, and partly because of his wild art. Although he didn't begin his art career until the age of 27, he was prolific, creating 1100 sketches and drawings and 900 paintings.
